wait a minute. arent the 1997 Z28 camaro engine is the LT1 with 285hp and 1997 SS camaro is the LT4 with 330hp. so yeah SS 1997 would be the better if i had the choice.

you are not likely to find an lt4 SS, and even if you did I would not personally buy one because it would be a sin to modify one (value goes down the crapper). I would get a z28 and modify it.
There are good points to a Z28. They're cheaper than an SS, so you can spend more on mods, if that's what you like to do. Anyone have an RS SS Camaro? I know they made em, but have only seen one on Barret Jackson.

The SS if its a 97 is def worth the extra money, it was an aniversary modle and had 330 HP, ( underated ) But in most cases, depending on how much the price diff is, Id just go for a SS, they have a few more HP, and some cosmetic differences. But MUSICMAN is correct, the Z28 and the SS had the same engine, just a few minor changes. Nothing major. And they are a very reliable engine if maintaned properly.

To the OP: The SS in 97 has a slight HP advantage over a Z28 stock for stock due to the better flowing intake. If you really like the looks, by all means go for it, otherwise purchase a Z28 and a Cold Air Intake and a Cat back and make similar, if not better HP numbers. As stated, a 98+ Z28/SS will have better performance due to the LS1 engine, but I personally don't like the way they look as much, and they're a bit more expensive, but that's your call.
