Default Dying fuel pump.

I'm pretty sure my fuel pump is almost done. It's been taking longer to start and hesitating under mild acceleration. Also a few times it's run really rough after restarting it in hot weather for a minute or so.

So I checked the fuel pressure and it won't go any higher than 22-25 psi. Should be 48-55 according to the manual. Took a vacuum line off and it wouldn't stay running unless I gave it some gas, pressure still didn't go much higher, so that seems to rule out the regulator according to the other threads I read. It's a wonder it's still running as well as it does.

Before I dump a few hundred on a new pump I want to make sure my diagnosis is correct with you guys.

Thanks a bunch!

from the gas tank side dump the filters contents into a clear container. if its clean your pump is on a short fuse and could strand you somewhere at any time. if the pressure is the same running as when not running i would say its the pump. it would take a really pluged filter to prevent pressure to come up when the motor is not running.

I can't even get the filter off. The quick connect came right off, but the threaded fitting is rusted on and my wrench keeps slipping off. I caught the contents into a container and there seemed to be a little sediment of some sort but I don't know if it was from the filter or debris from outside of the filter that came off when I loosened the quick connect.

was that from the tank side, cant remember which side has the fitting. if it was plugged you would bet a crabload of stuff. careful not to hurt the fuel line.

I don't know how I missed your post craby, it never showed up in my subscribed folder with a new post.

Anyways, I did finally confirm the pump is bad. I bought a new filter and a fuel line repair kit, hooked the new filter and line directly up to the gauge, turned the key on, and the pressure still didn't even get up to twenty.

I found the AC Delco pump for $227 on amazon so I ordered one there. Over a hundred less than rockauto.
Amazon.com: ACDelco MU1846 Fuel Tank and Pump Module Assembly: Automotive

I have one quick question though, what is the preferred method/tool to cut the hatch?

Thanks

Got it in and running Tuesday. Fixed three problems: slow starting, rough running after start up when warm, and hesitation under mild acceleration. All gone.

I was wondering though, what thickness should I get the plate to cover it? And where can I a piece of stainless steel for that?
