Default Driveshaft too short

alright so everytime i get up over ..ill say 50mph i get a little vibration and a little .."ticking" noise i guess you could call it. anyways i always assumed it had bad ujoints well when i put the car in the air i realized the driveshaft was about 2 inches too short the "yolk"? sticks out about two inches. Now ive heard rumors that maybe the old owners had an automatic transmission in it and switched it to manual ( i have the 6 speed) and so i was wondering if anyone knows where i could either buy a new one or find out if the car indeed was an automatic when built. i looked around on the net with my vin and i couldnt really get any answers...ive heard rumors about being able to go to a dealership with the vin and they could tell me but really im looking for a new driveshaft and if anyone knows how long the manual driveshaft should be that would be wonderful thank you

When you put the car in the air, did you have it supported by the frame or the suspension? Hanging by the frame will drop the rearend down, and pull the slip yoke out of the transmission some. And, have you disconnected the driveshaft from the rear yoke to see just how much further the front yoke really does slip in? As far as I'm aware, both manual and automatic takes the same driveshaft. You might not be looking at what you think you're looking at.

wow i could have sworn there are two different lengths for the 4th gens but aparently i am wrong. after a bit of looking it seems the yoke is the only difference. i guess it could be off a 2nd or 3rd gen if its shorter. i believe stock length is 41 1/2 from ujoint bearing center to center.

Are the one piece shafts the same length as the ones that have the bearing mounted to the body of the car? Could someone have swapped one for the other?

That would be a backwards move. Nobody would take out a one-piece driveshaft and put a 6 cyl 2-piece shaft in a Z28 (what the OP has).

thanks for the input everyone...still not sure why this driveshaft is to short.....and i had it suspended by the frame so im sure thats why it was out for a little bit but even when i jacked it up by the differential it was still stickin out pretty far so kinda rules that out...unfortunatly...
