SMC was also used to keep the doors light. The steel prototype doors were going to weigh almost 80 lbs each after they were assembled. The SMC doors are pound for pound stronger and they only weigh 45lbs fully assembled.

Oh and here is proof of the strength. This is my Sarah, right after she was T-boned in the door and fender. The door barely shows damage but it had to be replaced. The inner structure was badly cracked but the door held it's shape.

Thanks Massey, now that u mention it, I did read something about it being strong, but I forgot that the car was already real heavy. I know its s tad bigger than 3rd gen, but I can't figure out why the thing is so damn heavy? Imagine if they did use steel everywhere? We'd be looking at a 4800lb car, lol
