Default difficult problem

Driving on highway going bout 65 crusing next thing i know car start puttering it was like the more gas you gave more puttering and slowing down. Then starts smoking from underhood then out the exhaust crazy had no power to get up about a 40 degree hill mean while still smoking and exhaust is popping. Get it home and the exhaust manifolds are hot red. Let it sit for 2 days starts rite back up sounds like the cars going run well so i take it down me street and it starts over again. Theres no check engine light on or anything. Any suggestions?

The first thing that comes to mind for me is a clogged catalytic converter.
More information about your car would help. Year, engine, mods ect.

^^^ agree it sure sounds like the cat or cats is plugged, if cat or cats went to pieces your muffler could be plugged. or could have a potato in the exhaust pipe.

you can try and losen the exhaust before the cat or take out a 02 sensor and run the car to see if the issue goes away. plugged cat will stop the flow of exhaust gases leaving unburnt fuel in the pipes which burns causing the red hot manifolds. did you notice if the cat was also red hot?

if you have a stuck injector or a couple cylinders that are not firing it will overload the exhaust with fuel and can cause a red manifold. ive only seen it on one or two pipes though. try opening the exhaust and see if that does it. be fun, open exhaust for a few minutes to wake the neighbors
