We had one locally that was not caught with a lower octane than was allowed by law. They were fined the first time. They got a caught a second time and they were shut down or went bankrupt from the second fine...not entirely sure which as it was 10 years ago.

Most of the time when you see them replacing a tank, it's because it's past its service life not necessarily bad. They do the same for the pumps and lines. If you ever worked someplace with fire extinguishers on the poles there are companies that come around every so often to inspect, re-certify or replace it if need be. The same holds true for fueling stations.

Not saying your wrong, some do get replaced because of leakage or damage. But most of the time it's preventative replacement, not needed replacement.

OP, try the higher octane, see if there is a difference. Also try and avoid a station where you see them refueling the underground tanks. Wait a day or two before fueling there.
