car squealing

Got an 18 year old kid here. Friend of my son's. He's driving car identical to mine in the morning. 400 miles from SC to VA. He just had a motor put in and they finished lastnight. Car is squealing bad and mostly at idle. I asked about belt, water pump, power steering pump and brakes. He said he thought it was o-rings in the fuel injector. Is that possible? This kid doesn't seem to have parents to help him with anything. His mechanic said he should be able to make it up there. I know I wouldn't but you can't tell a kid that.

Quick belt troubleshooting, if it is squealing, spray it with WD40.
No squealing afher spray, replace belt.
Otherwise, squealing could be a vacuum leak.
Injector O-rings, maybe, but not likely. Spray them with WD40 and listen for different results.
May be a missing hose from a nipple - follow the noise and look for a dangling hose.

Don't see any (good) reason why you would want to put an oil based lubricant on a serpentine belt, unless he wants to remove and scrub the belt and pulleys clean when he's done! I have used brake cleaner as a test, spraying it on the belt while the engine is running. It stays wet long enough to tell you if it's the belt that's causing the squeak, then leaves the belt clean when it dries. Has the car had a coolant leak in the past? If coolant got on the belt, it can make the belt squeak. If that's the case, remove the belt and scrub it clean, or replace it if it hasn't been done or looks overly cracked.

He said it was a new belt. And wd40 is like saying Kleenex. Not necessarily what it is, just a spray in a can. We used it on our pulleys for a long time. Turned out the belt was just the wrong belt.

So if "WD-40" isn't WD-40, what is it that you're using that's a "spray in a can", Pam cooking spray? ![Wink](https://camaroforums.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Regardless, there's no need or want to use an oil on a belt and pulleys, whatever it's called on the label.
