Just water?! There is supposed to be a mix of coolant/water 60/40 usually.

You don't notice any drips after parking the vehicle? Any wet spots underneath the vehicle the next morning? Check all the hoses and clamps to make sure. Starting with the simple solutions first helps.

Would depend on where you live I suppose...for instance if in CA or Florida or the desert I don't suppose it would matter (granted not in winter..that'd be stupid).

Yeah, a lot of people will run water down in FL and here in AZ. You can get away with it, but it'll cause rust over time.

dont run straight water in the cooling system, the motor and cooling system are made to have some lubricants in the coolant. antifreeze has them in it. you can also buy additive to add to the water if you really dont want to use antifreeze.

If it was a head gasket you would notice the smoke from the exhaust. You can do a pressure check on the coolant system, I think parts stores like autozone loan the stuff out to people. When you apply pressure to the system you can check for leaks around clamps, hoses, and seals.

when there is a puddle on the ground, where about is the it? under the block or under the coolant lines? if it's under the block you need to try to think of the freeze plugs. i just changed mine and it took me and my dad 8 hours to do it. had to drop tranny to change a .99 cent part. but to answer the ?? i have no idea why OUR cars start to heat up while idling. was hoping to find an answer on here.
