can i re use my headbolts?
well i blew my head gasket apart on one side and i was wondering if i can reuse my headbolts because this thing is already costing my me a crap load of money now i got it all torn down the the pistons ... (also i like to add THIS MOTOR SUCKS TO WORK ON) that is allthanks guys
if you want it to cost even more down the road go right ahead. Re-using bolts is a bad idea becausethe boltshrinks and expands and becomes weak over time, taking it out makes it worse and torqing it back down is even MORE worse..
I am not sure, does the LT1 use a torque to yeild bolt like the LS1 does? If it does then, no you cannot. Or you could just go buy a set of ARP's and never have to worry about it. Taking short cuts now to save a few bucks, can cost you big time down the road.
What Spartan & JD said. Almost all modern engines use head bolts that stretch when you torque them, but only once.Even it they don't, considering what you've put into the rest of the engine new head bolts are cheap insurance. You can get a set from Fel-pro for about $50.
