You should go with a 98-2002 if you are looking at Fourth Gens. Personally I'm not a fan of the earlier style with the LT-1 engine with its known and well documented evil OptiSpark distributor

I agree with the above that the 98-02 is the way to go but I think you will find the 98-02s are a pretty penny compaired to their older brothers. Where is your budget? You want an automatic?

4th generation for sure. But judging from your name you are about 20 years old, and you want a z28. So mileage for you shouldn't matter because you are likely going to (and really going to want to) drive the wheels right off of it. You don't want a Camaro to get you from point A to point B, thats what Honda's are for. You want a Camaro so you can get where you're going fast, and in style. So unless you are serious about taking care of your car and not beating it up, i wouldn't shy away from buying one that has 100k miles on it. That leaves AT LEAST a solid 50k miles that you can lay down with little problems.

look over the body styles and if you like the ls body then a 98 up is what you will want, not alot of differences in the years. if you like the lt1 body then try to find a 96 or 97. you would want to stick to your way and try to find one in the 80 to 100k miles range. if well cared for the 4th gens will go over 200k miles. the opti can be a pain but if they are replaced with a oem gm performance opti they go between 60 and 120k miles before needing a replacement. the manual 6 speed will get more mpg.

Im thinking about spending 5-6k on a car thats about right after what i make in the summer. any good website or places from which i should get a car? And the transmision type dosen't really matter to me.

Finding a nice 80K 98-02 LS1 for 6k will be tuff. The manual trans sell for a good bit more then the automatics. Look around your area. I know in my area a 80K 98 automatic would go for about 7.5-8K retail. Even at a dealer auction they can bring 5.5-6K
