Test the tension if you can if not check and see how the tensioner looks and acts. If it wiggles alot it is prolly time for a new one.

OH and belt dressing is not that great on serp belts.

My Belt was also squeaking. I ended up putting an alternator on it because it was the cause of the noise. If you replace the belt and tensioner and it still makes noise, i would recommend looking into that.

yes, alternators whine when they go bad/start to go bad but if the noise went away with belt dressing for a while then its definitely da belt and not the alternator..

My 95' Z28 does the same thing. When I changed the oil last week I noticed the idler pulley looked fairly new( and was clearly aftermarket cheapy plastic) indicating to me the previous owner was interested in solving the squeaky problem. It has a belt with writing still on it too which I have to assume is still fairly new. Could it be the a/c compressor? I know the clutch doesn't engage on that, any way to rule out the individual belt driven accessories?

are you leaking any oil in the area of the belt. my power steering pump started leaking on mine and got on the belt causing it to slip and squeek. noticed the leak when i was installing a new tensioner.
