Default Any ideas?

I've noticed some strange stuff about my AC unit. It blows nice and cold, but with strange behavior. As long as I'm cruising at highway speeds and I keep it on a lower setting, it seems to work just fine. If I'm in stop and go traffic or if I turn the fan up all the way, however, it starts to falter and blows nearly nothing out of the dash. It almost seems like it's blowing air under the dash. WTF?!?

I took the car to my mechanic, who checked the vacuum and did a leak/dye test. All came up negative. Again, it blows really cold-even when it starts to blow out nearly nothing, the faint amount of air it does put out is cold.

I've got a 1998 Z28 Convertible. Anybody have any ideas or should I just take it to the dealer and likely get raped?

BTW...this is the car's ONLY mechanical issue. As such, I'm also deliberating if this is more important than fixing some of the cosmetics.

Sounds like a vacuum leak causing the blend door to go out of position.

I would lean more towards the vacuum as well. Maybe it's time to start looking for a reputable AC shop here in The Valley...or just suck it up (pun intended) and take it to the dealer.

the vacuum powered things on the system are to control where the air goes, not how much or how warm or cold. how much air is controled by a switch and hot or cold is cable controled.

Well he did say it also sometimes blows out under the dash instead of the dash vents...the description says it's still cold air, just blowing out somewhere else besides the dash vents, which sounds to me like the door is moving.

Well, car is at the dealership (*sigh*), but it appears they may have found the issue-a vacuum hose. They asked to keep the car overnight to make sure it wasn't anything else. In otherwords...dig until they find something. In any event, I'm also getting the driver's side window/lock bezel replaced while I'm there.

Well, the dealer is done. They could only find the vacuum issue and they repaired the bezel on my driver's side. I'm out for under $125.
