Default annoying starting car problem

so when i start my car sometimes i have to turn it 2-3 times to start it as in hold it down for a couple of seconds and let go. shud i hold it down for less time or more to get that 1st try start up? also lately when im at a complete stop and i am ready to move forward sometimes it cuts off, i know its not me stalling it because my rpms is always at the correct amount. any help would be appeciated, the car has only did the stallin to me 2 times since i got it which isnt a lot but it concerns me.

test the fuel pressure just to make sure. would not be the first time a new pump failed. have it scanned for codes. what year?
