does it hurt to just put 5 quarts of oil in a lt1

 

check the dipstick. if it says add oil, add oil. probly will not hirt but is a good idea to.

 

It's not too hard to check the dipstick, is it? Overfilling the oil can do engine damage, but it would have to be more than "just a little bit over."

 

5 quarts of random oil? like mixed weights? then yes...but i'm pretty sure they call for 5 quarts...........always check the dipstick to be sure

 

lt1 actually takes 4.5 qts. of oil for the block and then add what it takes for the filter. so 5 qts should show a little low.

 

5qts with a filter change. Add oil when the dipstick reaches add then only as much to reach the full mark about one qt.

 

THE REASON I ASKED IS BECAUSE THE GUY SAID HE CHANGED THE OIL IN A 1995 CAMARO Z28 6SPEED AND PUT 5QUARTS OF OIL IN IT.

I thought lt1s take 51/2 quarts of oil

 

yep it does take about 5.5 to hit the full mark. if its full and u have a new oil filter then u got a half qt for free.

 

will it hurt it to drive it a quart low

 

if its a quart low it should show as add oil on the dipstick. half qt low should show about half way to the add mark. shouldnt harm the motor to run it low, the oil will run hotter and need to be changed sooner at a quart low. half qt low i would think would be ok. it is best to have it close to the full mark.
