ABS Inop and other repairs...what is wrong with my car?
#12
My OTC Monitor scan tool will read ABS codes via the "regular" data link connector under the dash. This is on a 94 V6 with OBD I. I can read data/codes for the engine, transmission, or ABS while driving without changing any cartridges of connections. It's great.
The ABS inop light was activated on my car when I bought it and the PO said it was on the whole time he owned the car. Once I got the car running I scanned the ABS and discovered a motor driver code. Not really understanding what was going on I replaced the underhood hydraulic unit with a junkyard part and still had the problem. Then I replaced the big honkin' ABS computer located above the driver's left foor and *BINGO* ABS was back in operation.
A others have said the Low Trac (abbreviation for Low traction) wwarning light is there to warn you that, well, low traction conditions exist and a wheel is slipping. Basically the Low Trac light is telling you that the ABS is operating at that time. You know anyway because the noise and pedal feel changes so the light is really kind of dumb. I can't think of any other car I've ever seen that had such a thing. Well Mercedes has an orange triangle that flashes when the automatic stability control system is operating so I guess I'll revise my statement to say "american car."
From a "number of parts" standpoint the ABS on a 4tg Gen is really pretty simple:
ABS power relay
hydraulic control unit
control module
left front wheel speed sensor
right front wheel speed sensor
rear wheel speed sensor (on V6 cars without antispin)
wiring
warning lights
