Default A4 Tranny Mount

My tranny mount needs replacing and I was wondering if the haynes book is the best way to do this? They tell you to un-thread the nut on the stud that sticks through the cross member and to then unbolt the tranny mount from the tranny itself. Then they tell you to support and lift the tranny until that stud clears the cross member. Can the tranny be safely lifted with the drive shaft and everything attached until that stud clears the hole? I ask because that stud looks to be over an inch long protruding from the hole. Wouldn't it be safer for the tranny to support it with my floor jack and then loosen the nut on the stud and then remove the cross member itself, and finally unbolt the mount from the trannny then do the opposite to reinstall and secure the mount. Also, where is the safest place to lift that tranny? I don't want to lift it by the tail piece as I figure that is just cast aluminum and would at least crack. I was thinking of using a short piece of 6x6 I have in my wood pile along with my floor jack and place it under the read edge of the pan-not over the center of the pan but just on the edge where it should be strongest. Any thoughts? I appreciate any advice you guys might have--Thanks!!

Thats pretty close to what I did. Supported the edge on a block of wood and removed the crossmember and then the mount. It made life alot easier.

If you displace the lifting forces with some wood then you can lift on the pan just fine. YOu dont really even need to lift anything if you remove 4 more bolts for the X-member. That is how I would do it.

now dont go unbolting the trans mount crossmember without supporting it. it will come down quite a ways before stopping and could hurt something or somebody. i did not know the trans could be lifted far enough to clear the crossmember. i have always supported the trans and taken the crossmember off to get to the mount.

There's plenty of give in the motor mount area to raise the tail of the trans enough to clear the mount.
I use the block of wood under the pan method too.
