99 Camaro - SS or Z28 // How to identify an SS??
Hello,
I am from Germany and a big fan of the 4th Gen Camaros...
Is there a safe way to identify if a Camaro is a original SS or just a modded Z28.
Specifically I am right now interested in a 99 Camaro "SS".
A couple of things are making me wonder, if tghe car is a real SS..
- The plaque on den center console just says "CAMARO" not "CAMARO SS".
- The readline starts (dotted) already at 5500 rpm.
Can you guys give me an advice, how to identify an SS fore sure?!
Thanky in Advance.

There is a Service Parts Identification sticker on the drivers door. This tag list all the equipment and packages the car was built with. An 1999 SS can be identified by the RPO WU8, which was the SS Appearance Package. Your going to notice there is RPO Z28 too. This is because the Z28 option had to ordered to be able to get the upgraded SS Package. You also go to this site where you can give the company that brought SLP the VIN and they will confirm the car's authenticity.

As suggested, look at the RPO sticker on driver's door.
Look for Z28, WU8, and Y2K for SS model.
Also, if a true SS, depending upon option selected, there may be an SLP sticker on pass door denoting what SLP did to the Camaro, but not for 'base' SS's.
Base model SS has six holes on grille, three per side, and wrinkle finish, upper model SS's have four hole grille and shiny finish.
Yes, SLP will authenticate your SS via VIN.

I looked in the 99 Service Manual and didn't find all those codes either, but I looked at the build information from my 98 SS and found some of them. The rest of the codes could be some equipment specific to a car exported overseas.
CAE - GM ST Therese To SLP LaSalle QU
FE4 - Special Ride and Handling
IBP -
K43 - 102 Amp
NB7 -
PBT - Temporary Hood for Upfitter Del
YA7 -
1AY -
R6Q -
R7A - Sales Item No. 26

Not sure there's much difference, I found this at SLP it shows them as "manual reclining European style"
1999 Camaro SS #3433 : The Official SLP Registry
Fairly common, Google search got quite a few hits but didn't get any pics that were for sure correct.
I found this at LS1 tech, it's about a Firebird but same RPO, some pics there of different seats.
