did you have the code cleared with a scan tool? If not do it and see what happens. most codes do not auto clear for 50 successful tests in a row. The computer only performs certain tests when certain conditions are met. If you clear the codes and it comes back then ohm out the wiring and make sure that the computer is actually reading the sensor. The signal wire or the power wire can be at fault easy in a situmation like this. The code did say Speed Sensor output bad or missing, if I remember right.
you may also need to study some schematics and see what else can cause the signal to be pulled down or come up missing.

the opti is the distributor and it is behind the water pump. It is offically called the OptiSpark and the one from GM is troublesome at best. MSD makes a really nice replacement but it will cost you a few well earned $$$'s.
What scan tool did you use? If the MIL is still on then take it to an O'reilly or Advance Auto near you and they have advanced scan tools that will give a reading of the code as well as the description. Some of the simpler scan tools do not always have the ability to read the manufacturer specific data (p1xxx is manufacturer specific). Hope this helps

Not all of them died from moisture, tho it is one of the major causes of death of an Opti. I was a detailer for a Chevy dealer when the LT1s were new and I found many on the lot dead with only 6 or 7 miles on the cars. Caprice/Impala, Camaro, Buick Roadmaster. All came with the LT1 and all had issues. One Caprice would not start on the truck... Yea that was a fun time and it was the 3rd car in on the top rack, and the car that was in front of it was a special order that the owner was at the dealer waiting to watch his new Camaro roll off the truck. 3 hours it took us to get the car off the truck (pulled it off with a tow truck and tow cable). Thankfully the Camaro started just fine. That was the first Z28 with a M6 that I ever got to drive!! Ahhh the memories. In the 6 months I worked there we had 7 or 8 opti's die on the lot. Alot more came in for warranty, and once the vented ones came out the rate of failure dropped alot.
