Unhappy 95 Camaro steering wheel has 'play' in it when car is off

Okay, today I got my vehicle inspected and they told me that my car has 'play' in the steering wheel. Like if you just push it up or down it will move a little bit. This is when the car is completely off, and i have not noticed a thing when i am actually driving the car.

He told me that it was possible that the screws were just loose and to tighten them it would take 4hrs and 400 dollars.

or

It was something that involved removing the whole column and that would run about 1100.

He also said that this was common with camaros and GM cars in general, but I was wondering if there is anything I could personally do due to the fact that I'm kinda strapped on cash.

Thank you in advanced to all that take the time to help a fellow owner out.

The whole steering Column moves or just the steering wheel? Is your adjustable column lever tight?

Its most likely the four bolt down inside the column just above the tilt pivot point. Its been a weak spot in GMs design for going on 30 years. I plan on doing my 96 soon, I will do a write up. 4 Hours seems long but I have not done a 4th gen before.

I have done about 30-40 3rd gens. Back in the day I could do one in an hour and have a cup of coffee.

Im thinking it is just the bolts and 400 is so redic.
I just need this done so that I can pass inspection, other then that i havent even noticed it.
When were you thinking of doing that write up Gorn?

It feels like its just the steering wheel it self

take it to another shop for a second opinion. It should not cost $400. I'm sure it's a simple fix of wear and tear made something loose. I'm sure you could find a shop that will tell ya $50 to tighten it up or how to get it done in your driveway. That's one nice thing about Nebraska no vehicle inspections needed!
