Makes me think even more it could be a pump to block gasket issue, or a loose hose connection. If the actual pump is defective enough to leak, it's not very likely that it's going to heal itself. Once the engine was run and cooled down the first time after the new pump was put on, it would have been a good idea to check all the mounting bolts and hose clamps to button them down more as needed. Some initial "settling in" can occur and cause connections to be a little loose. Were those things checked?

A mechanic did the work on this and he was referred to me by someone who builds race cars, so I don't know. I have a new mechanic now who is closer to my house. I'm going to monitor it over the weekend, yesterday I drove it about 70 miles with no problems that I could tell. I need to check the water level this morning.

You need a pressure test, If you have an issue it will leak cold under pressure. That fact the motor is cold and has to hold pressure make leaks a lot worse and easy to find. I think you are jumping the gun assuming its a pump. It is a lot more likely to be a pin hole in a hose or a camp loosing its spring strength.

i had a leak in the oil cooler hose at the pump, right by the hose clamp. it would leak just a little on heat up so it never leaked at home. i pressured it up with a tester and started pulling and pushing hoses and it showed itself.

Hey bro, I can give you some sound information on this topic as I have lived this nightmare on my 94 Z28.. I've done extensive research on this particular matter and here's what I know to be true...The original Gm design that everyone is re building has a back plate that is glued on. The flaw is in the design because eventually, the antifreeze eats thru the glue and it leaks. I was told by a guy who worked at GM who had the same issue that the cure is to locate an aftermarket company who makes a New pump, but with s backing plate that is screwed on with screws. After asking each auto parts store to physically check their pumps to see if they had a backing plate that was screwed on, I found out that Advanced Auto Parts, sells a brand new pump not a rebuild that has a screwed on backing plate. I have never had a problem with the pump leaking prematurely ever again. Looking at my receipt for my pump, i paid $119.99 plus tax.
