Default 93 z28 dies and wont start

Hello everyone, this is my first post here as I am a first time camaro owner as of a week ago.

The camaro I just purchased I got very cheap from a car lot because whomever owned it before me completly destroyed the interior, it runs like a top and the body has a few tiny issues.

anyway, a couple days ago it died while I was driving down the street, I didnt even notice it died till I went to make a turn to park and had no power steering. I thought I ran out of gas because the sending unit is going out, but after a few minutes it started right back up and I was only able to put 5 gallons in the tank.

the next day the car had a hard time starting and ran a bit rough till i gave it a little gas, it ran great all that day. I tried to start the car later that night and it would crank but not start, I left it and came back about 45 minutes later and it started perfectly.

now, it seems to die when its warmed up and takes about 20-45 minutes to start again after it dies. and when it is started cold it runs rough for a few seconds then its fine (till it shuts off)

a mechanic had it most of the day today he said it started every time all morning but it was a bit rough on start, the car started so I took it for a drive, I shut it off and it wouldn't start for about 30 mins.

any ideas on what may be wrong would be appreciated

Sounds like the fuel pump may be going south, overheating after running for a while. You'll want to check to see what your fuel pressure reading is initially, and once the engine kills. If fuel pressure checks out ok, look for an ignition problem, possibly an overheating ignition module. But I'm putting my money on the fuel pump, I recently went through the same symptoms and cure myself.

Sound exactly like a fuel pump but do the tests Camaro 69 described. If it was anything other than a LT1 I would be 99% sure it was the fuel pump but when there is a Opti spark in play you definitely want to verify the fuel pressure is the issue.

agree, check fuel pressure. along with that i would suspect the ignition control/coil module, coil, coil wire, opti, thottle position sensor and im sure theres at least one thing im forgetting. have you flashed for trouble codes yet? be a good idea, have a look here. let us know what codes come up. http://shbox.com/1/dlc2.jpg

Thanks, I'll be checking the pressure soon.

my mechanic said it didn't throw him a code while he had it, but it also didn't die while in his possession.

did he flash it for codes or just look for the ses light, if no trouble codes stored in the computer then it would most likely be fuel related, not always though.

Thanks for the reply, ive been really busy so I havent been able to get time to work on the car lately.

The mecahnic flashed for codes, he said the fuel pressure is good, he also replaced the ignition coil and icm as he thought these may be the issue.

I had a chance to drive it today and it ran great all day unitil I went to drive it home and it decided to shut off again.

After shutting off if I try and start it the car tries to turn over but sounds rough but never quite makes it to fully started. It also sounded a bit rough (only for a few seconds) when I first started it when I got it from the mechanic.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

First think i want to say is dont let the mechanic throw parts at a problem he cant find. Its just going to waste your money.

Sounds like what my opti did when it was kicking it. But may just as well be the pump or even the regulator. I would personally verify that fuel pressure is within spec. If it is indeed within range, I would look towards the opti.
