93 base Camaro Cigarette Socket won't charge; fuse prob or something else?

hi, i need to move around more than usual street driving,

so because of my head injury I decided it was time for a Garmin GPS portable unit

my sense of direction is messed up

anyway, i learned that the charge on a usb port leading to my power cord operated laptop is only 35 minutes!

so it is important to get the cigarette socket working

it does have a metal lining around the socket

i tried an adapter that is round at one end and it has a slit or slot at the other end, that is how i found out it does not work,

but that same adapter mentioned above worked on my friend's car

there might be a blown cigarette lighter fuse ....

which brings me to this question:

1) where is the cig ligther socket fuse located? under the hood of a 93 camaro or near the dash?

i can't find the FUSE diagram for the life of me although i had it once before

secondly: if it is not the Fuse, then what else is needed to make it work so I can effectively use this Garmin gps unit

a 35 minute charge is just not enough and is laughable!

if it is not the fuse, are other alternatives easy fixes?

Thanks fellow forum members any help would be greatly appreciated.

pretty sure its fused with the horn. you may need a new base for it, part the the lighter plugs into. I had to replace mine.

I did not realize GPS units where still available I assumed everyone was just using their phones. Waze is a phone app that does everything on a GPS does and people can report where cops are to give you heads up. I used it on my daily commute, no telling how many tickets it has saved me and its free.

I believe the fuse is the AUX Power fuse. Its always a 20 amp one. As Craby said the socket itself is also a common failure point.

Hope you are feeling better.

Just so you know your mechanic already knows this stuff, it is very basic and almost the exact same on every car made in the last 50 years. It would be the equivalent of telling a Plumber that “drain water flows downhill”. You would most likely annoy him. This is a first day on the job kind of repair.

Gorn he texted me a while back (2 days ago) that he'd probably has to add a wire to the battery and a fuse holder

yesterday i emailed him the dorman part for the entire cigarette lighter socket, so he probably won't have to do that.

it's attached hereto....
oh no i don't know how to attach it....oh well

but it looks like a cylinder and a wire and a fuse, part is made by Dorman, a popular auto part brand

thanx
