4th's ever gonna appreciate?
Hey all, Just curious noticing how many nice 4ths tend to be offered from 5-10k and don't sell quickly. Do you think these will ever appreciate to the value they are worth in a few years? I see first gens in the condition of my car sell for 20 grand or more, 2nd's going in the mid teens then 3rd and 4ths are rarely selling more than 7k locally unless they are ultra low mile, show pieces and then they are usually 12-15k. Just wondering what you all think?
No way I could sell mine for street price and find anything remotely close to the enjoyment factor in the price range.

When I was a teen in the early 90s you could buy a 65-70 Mustang for 2K all day long and 67-81 Camaros for about the same. now you are lucky if you can buy a first gen mustang or Camaro shell for 5K. I paid $2000 for my 66 Mustang GT (back then GTs were special cars not just any V8 car) and it had a perfect body, no rust and very little damage mainly just some dings from 25 years of use. Today that same car in that same condition as when I bought it would set me back prolly 8-10K. The 2nd gens around here are in the mid teens for nice and a 1-3K for ok. First gens are 20K for nice and 10K for a shell. 3rd gens are a dime-a-dozen here and not very popular. 4th gens are holding strong and have been for a while. I dont think they are going to go down much in value before they start going up. The LS1 cars are commanding a better price than the LT1 cars and right now a decient Z28 will set you back $4-10K an SS will put you out $8-15K, and the 3.8L cars are about $3-8K and they do sell around my neck of the woods. Some dealers think the POS they have is worth a mint but if it is such a nice car, why has it been on your lot for the last 2 years?
I think we will start seeing the values of 4th gens start to go up in about 20 more years, 3rd gens prolly in another 10-15. Early 2nd gens are going up fast around here, the mid 2nds are not very desireable so they are leveling out and the late 2nds are starting to go up now.

who knows???
I've always been told to pay down extra principal on mortgages. If you refinance, to bring cash and pay down the mortgage more because historically homes appreciated 5% annually. So, who wudda thunk the $200k plus I put into remodeling would all be gone along with most of the equity?
Nobody can guess if the 4th gens will increase in value as a collector piece.

It is a simple matter of supply and demand. In my area, there are a lot of 3rd and 4th gens still out there, and some of them are in decent condition.
Not a lot of 1st gens around in my area, and a complete shell is going for over 10K (rust doesn't cost any extra). There are some 2nd gens, and depending on condition their price varies a lot.
There are a ton of 3rd gens, and many are beat to crap, so no-one wants them. There are a lot of 4th gens, with a ton of miles and they look like they have been hard miles. So no-one wants to spend the money on them either.
Give it another 20 years or so, and 3rd and 4th gens will be commanding a decent price.
When I was a kid in the early '70s, we had a family friend that raced '57 Chevy's. Every year he would build a couple of them for the local circle tracks and got a few more for parts. People were just about giving them away back then. He must have totaled at least 30 of them over the years, plus at least that many were used for parts.
Any idea what 60 '57 Chevy's would be worth nowdays? But back then, they were basically worthless.

I recently saw a low-miles 2000 Z/28 sell at a Mecum auction for $7000. It was in mint condition, too. I don't think their values will rise any time soon. But, as has been said in the above posts, they will most likely see a jump in another 20 years. Even then, it will be for low-mileage, prime examples only. You might see the '93 Pace Cars, '96-97 SS models, and 35th Anniversary SS models rise in value sooner. But that's just a guess.

Supply and demand. All car go thru cycles. New, they are worth a lot then they drop then they start to rise back up as people who had one when they where young want another one. When you look at the second gens there was time time you could even get the 70-73 cheap and you could not give away the 75-77.
So yes they will go up in value but how quick it happens will depend on a lot of things. If the goverment would step in and stop the newer super cars from being sold the price of these cars would rise very quickly but keep in mind it took a good 30 years of scrapping 75-77 camaro before they started to have any real value.

It'll be a while, way to many still on the road. Also, it's an aquired taste, I have 2 and a half (parts car), don't want to sell any right now. Give 'em a while. I remember when you couldn't give away an early El Camino, now try to buy one that's actually driveable. Same with the low HP vettes. Anyway, point is, how long are you willing to wait?
Cars don't really gain value until they get over about 30 years old...this holds pretty true for almost anything...even the hyper-exotics (after the inital huge value boost when you have to wait list for em when they are brand new) lose value until they hit "collector" status
