It really is chicken and egg. You can drive youself nuts trying to figure out what went wrong with a given transmission. In the end is does not matter. All roads lead to a rebuild. Once you have tried to drive a car that is slipping you overheated and glazed the clutchs. Even if you found a external problem the remaining life of the trans would be measured in hours. Heck the overheated seals could blow out the second you fixed the problem.

Eep. That sounds like my old trans. Would hit the rev limiter if I tried to floor it in about 2nd gear going into 3rd. During normal driving it would shift great. After I got it home after I bought it, checked the trans fluid and it was low and leaking from the pan.

No machining on a Auto rebuild. The is a lot of special tools involved. There is also a lot of knowledge that goes along with it. For a normal person about 10 weeks of training about 2K worth of tools (in addition to you standard mechaincs tools) and you will be decent at a given tranny after about the 4th or 5th rebuild.
If it possible you could read thru GMs step by step manual, yes but then you would need every GM tool. Your not going to save money by doing one tranny. If you want to learn and add to your abilities then go for it. If you want to save money and have a dependable tranny find someone that knows the tranny like the back of his hand and see if he does side jobs. You pull the tranny and take it too him.
Shift kits have changed a lot, there is not much too them since the Tune on the PCM controls the shift. I think what you are looking for is hvy accumulator spings.

Well my grandfather is very familiar with Chevy transmissions and all worked on countless 700r4s and a few 4ls i believe, he is also good friends with Danny Blankenship who im sure could lend a hand. And as far as tools im sure his 1 acre shop has at least two of every kind known to man (Not trying to sound pretentious but if it can be done by man, he can do it)
