LOL anything can be done. I have seen a 454 in a VW bug. But unless you have a machine shop and you know how to weld and fabricate. this would be a huge project. Putting any engine other then one that was designed in a 4th gens is a major undertaking, even just putting a regular chevy 350 is a huge project. Go over to the V6 forum and check out the V6- V8 swap sticky

Like I said do the research. The cheapest you will do the convertion is 3K. The one memeber we have that put a chevy 350 spent 5K not counting the motor and the car. Step one will be to get out the tape measure. Check the width and height of the motor. the engine bay of the 4th gen is very limited. You can not just cut out the inner fender like an older car because it part of the cars structure.
Things you will need to make:
Motor mounts. (these mounts will not be simple since you will need to balance the heigh and get the drive line angles right. If you do not know how to setup drive line angles you might as well stop reading now.)
Oil pan (you can start with the stock out but it will need a lot of modding)
Headers (you will need to start from scratch with these)
Trans cross member. Depending on how your motor mount go you may be able to buy a 350 cross member and torque are support. Estimated cost $600 or you will have to make all that stuff too.
Since you are no longer using the computer system you will need to rewire EVERYTHING you want to work. Your going to have to make your own gas gage. Speedometer, tach, headlights, brake lights everything your going to have to make.
Sell your forth gen and buy a early 3rd gen or the correct 2nd gen. The price of a nice 2nd or 3rd gen body will be cheap compaired to installing the Pontiac motor into a 4th gen.

isnt the pontiac 400 a wide block like the old 326? if so i think your fishin in dead water. its hard enough to change plugs with a smc, i doubt the wide block will fit between the fenders making a plug change a major operation. as in having to lift the motor.
