I know that this must be in the archives, but I guess that I don't know the best selection of key words to get where I need to be since this is my first visit. Anyway....
I have a 2000 SS and am tired of replacing the brake rotors and pads. I still have stock rotors, but use metalic pads. My wife usually drives this car and she is in a lot of stop and go traffic since we are in Atlanta. After a brake job, it does not take long before the brakes start pulsating again. I believe that is because the rotors seem to warp very quickly so I would like to do an upgrade. It can't cost any more than I have paid for all of the brake jobs. I need something that will last longer and it must be safer than the annoying pulsations.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

slotted and dimpled (or drilled) rotors disperse heat more quickly....heat is what causes warping, so if you have less heat, you have less warping.

 

Gstuke, do a 2 piece rotor replacement. Meaning...first piece rotor...second piece rotor hat. The 2 piece is more expensive but will cost you far less in the long run. I had the problem with warping as well, but went Wilwood all around 2 piece rotors and your guaranteed at least 5 years on the rotors, once you need to replace the rotor. You just replace the rotor, not the hat, its much cheaper, since you aren't buy the entire package rotor and hat (usually welded together.)

The stock f-body rotors are junk, if you go with a quality aftermarket company (BAER) you should be fine. I also know that a lot of guys go with the C5 brake upgrade.

 

I had this problem within a month of getting my 2000SSM6 however I was lucky and got a clue. On day two of having the car, I had to replace one of the tires. A month later I got the pulsing pedal. Sure enough, the problem was on the wheel with the new tire. According to my brake guy, these wheels need to be torqued to exact specs otherwise the discs will warp. Putting a torque wrench on a wheel is more than most tire places are willing to do.
All that said, although I never had any more problems, 18 months later I installed drilled rotors as my first upgrade and I like them a lot. They take a little more foot pressue but they modulate far better. They are quicker to start working when they're soaked in a hard rain also.

 

Baer brakes are awesome. I would also look into Power Slot though, for rotors. I hear they make a good produc.t I've also been hearing a lot about Stop Tech and SSBC lately.

 

I have a 98 SS and had some problems putting brake pads on it yesterday. I'm not a handy person when it comes to cars but brake pads aren't rocket science. The replacement pads seemed to be too thick. Does the SS have a thinner pad more like the C5?

 

CamaroSS2045, you have to use a c-clamp to compress the piston, then put your new pads in. just tighten the c-clamp until the piston is flush with the bore. You'll see what i mean.

 

I did use a c-clamp to compress the two pistons back. Even with them all the way back I couldn't get around the new pads.

 

maybe they gave you the wrong pads at the parts store
