For the years you are looking at yes. You do not have to run 93 but it is highly suggested. Like i said before you are talking about 100 HP over the V6. Take some advice from some of the guys buy the SS/Z if you have the means.

I'm 17 and have had my 96 3.8 since I was 16.I'vehad a lot of fun in it and also a few close calls. Before I got it I thought I would be satisfied with just a V6 and I am but it has pros and cons. I mean it says more if you trick the **** out of a V6 and get it to run with Z28/SS then if you just go out and buy one with a V8. But being able to make a V6 obviously isn't easy. I would just go with a Z/SS if you can afford it that way you don't regret it down the road. I mean your not going to be shooting yourself in the foot later for buying a car with "too much power" I just don't think such a thing exists. But my mom sure does.

If you arePRIMARILY worried about fuel economy I thinkthere are better cars overall to select than a Camaro. However, my Z-28 even gets close to 25 mpg on the highway if I take it really easy. I had a 99 Accord V-6 Coupefor a winter car\daily driver for a long time that I justrecently sold, and it actuallygot worse mileage than my LT-1 Camaro. So there ya go.

It depends on who you ask. I have heard of some sixes getting mileage in the teens, and eights getting mileage in the high twenties. If the engine is properly maintained, and you aren't mashing the loud pedal all the time, the eight will get as good as the six.
