Default 1996 Alarm

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread but I was not sure where to put it.

My boyfriend has a 1996 camaro and it recently would not start. They found no problems with it at the shop but then he noticed the alarm was not working and thinks that is why.

Is there anyway to disabled the alarm? I looked online for instructions but could not find anything other than people asking the same question.

I would appreciate any help.

Thank you!

Is the security light coming on? It may be an issue with the VATS (vehicle anti theft system) where there is a resistor chip in the key. there is a way to bypass that if you do a quick search for VATS bypassing. You just need to know the ohms of resistance built into the key as there are a couple different values

I had a problem with my 98 with the alarm. I tried to have the local Chevy dealer fix it and it cost me $1200. The key word was tried. They said it was the security chip in the car's computer. After a month, it f'ed up again. I took it to a local stereo shop and had them replace it for $300 and they did dis-arm the factory alarm system.

The OEM Alarm system CAN NOT be turned off. The chip in the key is a different system. This chip ties in with the security light on the dash. If the system is In-op, the light will stay on. If it flashes, its a wrong resistor code. All the chip is, is a resistor. two white wires under the dash, these tiny white wires are wraped in a orange jacket. You can measure your key, find a resistor, and put this resistor in line with the wires, one end of the wire, to the other. Most alarm shops (like my self) will use a bypass, or cut and add a resistor. depends on the car how we do it, and the customers request.

only problem with adding the resistor in line is this bypasses the security system that has been put in place to keep the car from running.

The keyless entry system.. start with a new battery in the remote... and then if it still not working, the remote could be bad, out of program, or a problem with the mod under your dash.

good luck
