Default What's the best Synthetic Oil for my 97 SS?

Just bought a really nice 1997 SS with 105k miles. In the wife's car I use Amsoil
which is advertised to go 25k miles or one year between changes. The SS
manual recommends Quaker State. I want to change the oil to start fresh.
Can I use the Amsoil 5-30 or is another brand better for the engine?

Thanks!

dont ever go over on your oil changes above 4,000 with the mileage, i recommend Mobil1 10W40. alot of people swear by royal purple full synthetic too.

I have used Mobil 1 since 1990 and I highly recommend it. It is standard fill at the factory on the Corvette and many other high performance cars. I would use only the viscosity recommended by GM. I have never seen an owners manual recommend Quaker State?

Quaker State and Penzoil are all under one company now. Also the Amsoil 25,000 mile oil won't break down, but the filter it uses will. So you need to get a new filter and it holds 1 qaurt so you lose all benifits price wise for the oil. Amsoil 7,500 mile is what we sell at work and that is what I use. For all out racing though, I highly recomend Royal Purple too. I use that stuff and I stand behind it 100%. Also the weight of the oil is important. The hotter it runs, the thicker the oil. Go too thin and the oil will fry quicker. Mobil is over rated... and over priced. Amsoil was the first in Synthetics in the 1960's contracted by NASA to produce an oil sutible for their prototype air crafts. On top of that, Amsoil is a more stable oil over a wider range of temperatures compared to Mobile 1.

I make my recommendations based on performance test data that I have seen. You can make your own decision on brand. Oil viscosity recommendations have alot to do with bearing clearances. If you have an engine built with larger bearing clearances, then you would want a heavier weight oil.

either mobil 1 or royal purple would be good, they both can go 15k without changes
