Transmission swap
I bought a 1986 camaro last year pretty cheap and it basically is a carbed set-up in a fuel injected car. Now there is no computer so I had to wire somethings in but that aside I was thinking of getting a 400 trans. However my friend is telling me not to and rebuild a 350 trans that he give me for 75 bucks and I already do have the rebuild kit for it. So my question is which should I go for?
It will be alot cheaper to go with the 700R4. If built even remotely well they handle above stock power. Most problems with the 700, is that the TV cable is not properly set and that causes them to slip pre-maturely. You said its a carb motor in an FI car which means it was re-connected during that swap. Most people never get the correct brackets and adapters to get the geometry and adjustment correct. Check the overall length of the 700R4 vs. TH350 vs TH400. I believe they are all different lengths, requiring a driveshaft modification.
I know this is for a older chevelle, but gives pretty good information on transmission dimensions. http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...ech/index.html
someone was making a swap kit that included the driveshaft, cross member, brackets and cables, and everything else needed. summit racing might still carry it, but it was not cheap
I would stick with 700r4 cause you get overdrive and then you can run lower rear end gears but still be able to cruise at descent rpm's on freeway. 400's alot of trans for just 383. Like DJ says make sure the tv cable is adjusted right
Swapping to a TH350/400 is plain stupid unless it's an all out drag car, even then it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. For what it's going to cost for the new transmission, a drive shaft, torque arm relocation cross member, and the shifter conversion, you could have the 700R4 built to hold 600hp easily. Then you can still get on the interstate after a day at the track and pull 20mpg.
