Default Transmission Identification

Hi everyone. I'm new to the muscle car scene, but i've been a life long lover of american muscle. I recently bought an 83 Berlinetta with a 350 in it. Well my tranny blew up on my on Friday (Friday the 13th, go figure right? haha), and i bought a new one from a friend saturday. I bought a TH 700r4 with a shift kit, thinking that's what was on the car now, well today as im tearing it apart i noticed that the shift linkage is different from the 700 i just bought. My friend told me that i most likely have a 400 on it right now. I'm wondering if there is a sure fire way of finding out what kind of tranny I have. Since I have something different, will it be possible to put a 700 on due to the difference in the shift linkage? Thanks for the responses!

-Jason

P.S. Is there any good sites that have a good write up on the easiest way to pull a tranny? Every site I come to doesn't really give great detail. Thanks again!

There is a square, 4 wireplug on the right side of the 700 you got. Does the one in your car now have that? The linkage can be swaped.Does the pan look like the 700's square pan with 16 bolts?
If your car has a 350 now then its been swapped and the trans may have been also.

Well I haven't had a chance to work on it today, but I will check for that sensor tomorrow before work.

You say the linkage is interchangeable. I'm assuming there's an adaptor plate? I will be buying a B&M Ratchet shifter too, seeing the tranny will be out and seems easier to install then, rather than later. Will the shifter come with the neccessary adaptors to interchange linkage?

since the car is a 83 Berlinetta it probably has a 350 turbohydramatic in it now. if you want to put a 700R in it's place you will have to get the trans mount, torque arm mount , driveshaft , shifter , shifter cable , and shifter cable bracket (one that bolts on the pan) , T.V. cable and bracket from a car that had a 700R in it from the factory....i'have done the same conversion on the yr car.

Oh wow. That's a lot of work, just to swap in a 700. I'll see what kind of transmission is in it now, and I guess i'll go from there.

After spending hours on hold, and numerous questions, I've narrowed it down to that I have a TH-200 in my car now. Summit has a TH-200 to TH-350 Changeover kit that comes with everything you need to swap in a TH-350. It also says I need an 82 or equivalent driveshaft (I have an 83 Berlinetta, will it work?) While looking for a TH-350, I've found long tails and some that just say TH-350 for sale. I'm assuming I need the shorter of the two styles, correct? Sorry for all the newbie questions!

the 700R was the only auto trans avalible in the 83 Camaro with a V8 , it has to be a 700R unless it's been changed to a 200R..... it is possible that your car was a V6 from the factory and someone swapped a 350/200R combo into the car (the V6 trans will not bolt to the V8) if your shifter plate says PRND2L or PRND21 then you have a factory V6 car , if it says PRNOD21 or PRNOD2L then it could be either because V8 and V6 were both avalible with an OD trans.

if its the stock berlinetta tranny, it would have been a th-200 (yes, 200). just go to a junkyard and pick up the proper linkage and brackets, and you should be on your way
