tpi to carburetor swap
i have a 89 iroc z28 5.7 auto and i want to replace the tpi with a edelbrock manifold and holley carb. can i remove the ecm and all the fuel injection wiring or do i need it. i heard of the trans requiring some wiring for the convertor, what is that for. the tpi system is for sale, i recently bought accel 24 lb injrctors for it but i rather run a carburetor setup with headers. thanks for your help.
Everything on the passenger side bulkhead can be removed, you need the wires on the drivers side however. You will need to either put a fuel pressure regulator on your current fuel pump, or drop the tank and remove the pump and use a mechanical pump. You will need a lockup kit for the transmission if you plan on driving on the highway.
Wait, so you're going to get RID of the tpi? ok.... I don't get it....
Yeah, basically all that Jr. said.
don't forget about that fuel pump, 40psi going to a carburetor isn't exactly going to be fun. 10psi going to my carb on my car was enough to keep it from driving right, 4 times that would be a disaster.

you can use an electric fuel pump without a return line, but you need to find one specific for that application. also, depending on your area and emissions laws, you may not be able to legally change from efi to carb.
hey, thanks to all for the info, jr, can you please be more specific on the driver side wires that need to be kept. i know there is maf relay, burnoff relay, fuel pump relay, how about the ecm, can that be removed in its entirety. my 89 has vats security. is that part of the ecm.
Everything on the drivers side bulk head is what you need. The passenger side leads to the ECM, so you can remove that entirely. Yes, VATS is part of the ECM. Basically for it to run you just need a hot wire from the ignition to the distributor, battery lead to the starter, ignition lead to the starter, hot lead to the alternator, and a mechanical fuel pump with the original pump removed. Then you have the tach wiring, gauge wiring, etc. which should all be on the drivers side as well. 89 still had a mechanical speedo, so you won't have to mess with that.
