Default SES on 91 5.0 RS

I just bought this car today and drove it for 2 hours on the expressway. During that time (within 15 mins) the SES light came on. All guages read normal, cept for the temp guage, it was running cool (about 130-140 F). Engine was responsive, no smoke anywhere, ran fine. So I wanna know if it may have a low temp thermostat or no thermostat at all and if that would trip the SES? Thanks!

More than likely your guage is broken and the SES light has nothing to do with it. Touch the radiator hoses and see how hot they are. Research on here how to run a diagnostic on the car. It is very easy and it will flash you a code so you can figure out why the car has a light on.

Also the heater does not get very warm at all. I will run it later and check the hoses like you said. Thanks for the info.

Have the codes checked and go from there. It most cases the SES involved emission control items.

Does the SES light go off after you stop the car and restart it? My 92 5.0 did this ONLY at freeway speeds. It was a bad EGR valve...Very easy and cheap fix.

You can test your EGR very easily to isolate this. While the engine is idling get your finger through a slot on the bottom of the valve and manually press up on the diaphram...if the engine stumbles and stalls the valve is ok. If not, the passages under the valve in the intake are clogged (I doubt because these cars aren't THAT old) or more likely the EGR is faulty. My camaro runs very cool at freeway temps also and HOT in town. 225 degrees and up...freaks me out...but it IS normal for third gen camaros. Good Luck and hope this helps.
