Default Rebuild or Replace?

my 305 still runs pretty strong but theres still alot of work to be done on top of a tranny leak from the front seal i think???? would it be smarter to replace my 305 with something new or just rebuild taking cost into consideration?

Well you are going to drop the tranny for the seal replacement. So if you have the funds it will cost you juat a little more for a 350 then rebuilding the 305.

i figured it was gonna have to be dropped thats bummer but the reason i asked is my buddy is tellin me its cheaper to just rebuild the top end instead of goin with the 350 he said it would be about 2000$ to 6000$ definalty thought i would ask some of you vets for a little more detailed info any idea about how much that 350 might cost cause i definatly think i need to put serious thought into this before i go forward with anything

Check out GM's long blocks that put out more HP/TQ then you will get from the 305 rebuild. The 250 HP 350 should be around $1400. That is if you can use a lot of the external parts from the 305. Such as the alternator, water pump, induction etc... Now this is not going to be a hot performance engine but it will be way more then you have with any 305 combo.

Do a Google seach for GM crate engines. The price may have gone up since I did a seach.

-----Forget this kit, not neccessary for your purpose.

Just remember that the 305 & 350 are identical and use the same external parts. You did not state what model or induction you now have or if you plan on keeping the ECM controls. But you can still keep it even with a carb. Do a lot of reseach & planning before you put the first wench to it. The most important items are planning & prep work and I can not stress this enough.
