If you mean is the V8 tranny stronger there is 6 cyl. and V8 clutch packs in the older trannies the V8 had one more clutch plate then a 6 had

 

I'm looking at buying a 78' or 79' Camaro Z28 and was wondrin should I get a V8 Auto or V8 4 speed.

 

First of all, have you ever driven a manual transmision car? I am asking because many people object to having to think about shifting while driving. Also, it takes a bit of time to be really good at it. If you think you can handle the manual, then the cohice is up to you. For drag racing, all things being equal, the autos are usually quicker off the line, but the manuals usually catch up at the top end, and turn higher trap speeds.
