Default Q-Jet Troubles

Hi everyone,
I have a question for yall. I've been killing myself trying to figure out whether or not the q-jet on my 305 is correct, and whether I should keep it and rebuild it or not. The numbers I got off of it are 17085204 2104 HZJ... Any assistance would be strongly appreciated.

Thanks, DacMan

The Q-jet/aftermarket debat has been going on since way before the the internet was around. It will not be decided in this post. All that can be given is opinions. Here is my take on it. Q-jets can be made to work very well but the guys that can tweak them a few and far between. Most of the aftermarket carb will give you a better HP rating on a Dyno but in the right hand the Q-jet can be very close to those numbers and give you better drivablity at the lower end of the torque curve.

Again it is just my opinion but if you want easy just get a Holley Avenger. If you know someone who is good with the Q-jets or you are up for a big challange stick with the Q-jet. IF you want to play and plan on modding your car so you will need to constantly adjust the carb get one of the other aftermarket carbs. Her is a link for "How to" video

Hmmm...Well no matter how interesting this carb discussion is (I have my own thoughts about Q-jets for most people, but we'll leave those out), it doesn't belong here...off to Third Gen we go!

i've got the old Quadrajet that originally came on my GM 350, i'm thinking about going back to it for the 377. i figure that if i can get the tuning down for the Q-Jet, then tuning other carbs will be that much easier. plus, my Q-Jet flowed 730cfm on a flow bench, well better than my Holly 650 carb.

It's funny that on the fourth gen page I got way more responses than on the third. Maybe I should post all my questions there. lol lol.
