Default overheating engine light bogging

I just bought a 88 camaro convertible that is overheating. It runs OK until you get up to speeds over 50 then when you slow down the service engine light comes on and the temp is 230-240+ and it bogs and loses power. Radiator looks OK but has a small leak. Fan does come on but I dont know when. Has a 2 year old crate 305 from dealership in OK Runs great until overheat. Any ideas.

The overheatting will cause poor running. First cheap and easy thing to do is you can replace the thermostat. Also make sure the air deflector is still on the bottom of the radiator suport. You found a small leak but does the car lose lots of coolant? Make sure there is none in the oil.

Oh and for giggles check if there is code(s) storedand what it is.
