I got an 84 z28 a while ago and it needs some help, just like me. i noticed while under the car one day that the rear end is leaking oil from both ends and from the center, i think from your yolk. so instead of me taking it apart and changing all the gaskets or bearings or whatever goes in there, my question is what options do i have to replace it? what is out there that is strong, has posi and disc brakes?

 

All 3rd Gen 9-bolt (2:77,3:27 & 3:45) and 10-bolt (2:73, 3:23 & 3:42) stock ratio rears will work for you. Also 4th gen 10-bolt rear will work also except the width of the rear is 4" wider overall. Also all of them might Not have a Limited slip or have one that works or have the rear brakes you want.
The supply of servicable parts is shrinking or not available in your area due to the age of the cars.

 

Get something from a newer 4th Gen Z or SS manual. 3.43s disk limited slip.

 

I looked On other posts and even did some searching on google about what's out there. One site said something about a ford rear end I think. I obviously can't get to involved with my limited knowledge but I was hoping to get a rear end with 4.11s disk breaks posi rear. So is my best bet going with a fourth gen rear? Does 4 inches make it look sort of ridiculous or is it done pretty regularly?

 

You won't get 4.11s stock, GM only went up to 3.43s with the f-body.

 

Why the jump to 4.11s? Like BC said, you aren't going to find one stock with 4.11s. As far as putting the fourth gen rear in, your wheels will stick out a bit. All fourth gen Z/28s and SS's will have disc brakes and a posi. But the 10 bolt isn't strong, so that sorta rules it out to put it in.

 

Take a tape measure to your car and see how much clearance you have to move the tires further out. The 3rd gen rearend overall width is 62", 4th gen is 64.72" (2.72" wider). So if you want to use a 4th gen rear, the tire on each side is going to stick out an additional 1-3/8". Something you want to consider when buying a used rearend though, you have no idea if it's in any better or worse shape than your current one is in.

 

For some reason I thought there were more options out there for this gen camaro. Honestly I'm just getting into this and I don't know if its now worth changin the whole rear. I was doing some reading on how to replace the pinion seal and how to change the bearings. I might do the seal and jus have someone do the bearings. I don't like the idea of smashing something in the a hammer. Unless that's how it's done?

 

you can buy a new rear end for about $2500, or you can pay a shop to disassemble it and replace the seals for about $200, and around $600 to swap gears and install a limited slip with new seals and bearings. the hubs on the axles are also different from the 4th gen, and will require modifying the axle hub, the wheel, or both. you can also swap to 4th gen wheels if you install a 4th gen axle
