Default Ignition and distributor set up

Hey guys, I just got done putting a rebuildt 305 in my son's 83 z28. Things went well but we are having a hard time getting the timing correct.
We dont live in an emissions state so we didnt redo any of that. I am wondering if I need to set up an indepent ignition and distributor to by-pass the ecm? We can get the motor to start and Idel, but it is rough and backfires. We checked TDC for #1 and the timing mark is around 0 to 10. Any suggestions on how to get this beast running and reliable would be great.

thanks

just grab a stand-alone distributor for an older non computer car or truck with the coil on top of the cap.
