High and low idling problems
Alright so I just bought an 87 camaro. When you start the car up it idles at about 2500 rpm's...so when you kick it in reverse or drive the decline is so fast that it will cause the car to basically stall every time unless you're quick enough to punch it and give it enough gas to keep it going. If you do get the car moving, when driving it, if I'm in heavy traffic or at a stop light it will idle at 500 rpm's while in drive with me holding the break. I either have to give it gas at the light or pop it in neutral or else the car will again just stall out in the middle of traffic. We changed the distributor cap, plugs and wires to see if that would help but if didn't. We're gonna put an edelbrock carb on it tomorrow to see if that will do anything as well, because we believe it might have to do with the carb, seeing as the camaro is running so rich it smells like gasoline is coming out of the air conditioner. If anyone has any input on the matter, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Colton

Your carb (Quadrajet?) needs a choke, fast idle, and curb idle adjustment. Fast idle at start up is the choke/fast idle setting. 2500 is too high, but can be lowered by adjusting the screw at the passenger side choke linkage. The too low of an idle idle after it warms up is because the fast idle choke cam then drops off, and the linkage then rests on the curb idle adjustment screw at the front corner drivers side of the carb. Nothing's wrong with your carb, it just needs an adjustment. And if you don't know how to adjust the carb you have now, you're going to have the same issue with the Edelbrock, except the Edelbrock will come with an owners manual that you should thoroughly read.
