Hi i am new
i just bought a 84 z28 for $500 5 speed t tops but no motor. My cuzin sold his old 305 from his 1990 silverodo. I was going to throw a intake and carb on it but i am running into some problems and i would like to know a few thig before i stick to much $ into the motor. The flywheels are different size and i was wondering if it will bolt up to my transmission with little or no mod. Then is there anything else that i have to worry about or change before i put the motor in the car.

I am a little confused...you said your cousin sold his 305. To you?? If so, was it bolted up to a stick or automatic? If it was an automatic then you will have a pilot bearing to worry about since you have a stick.
The 305 my cousin sold me came from an automatic and the Camaro is a stick. My friend and i found out that the flywheel won't work i duzn't even fit in my bell housing. the crank is different bolt patren size so the flywheel that came with the car has a bigger bolt patren but the diameter of the flywheel is smaller then the one from the 305 motor. Should i be looking for a new crank shaft or is there a flywheel that will work or am i just wasting i time with this motor.
hey, whats up, you don't need to be looking for a new crank, when it comes time to put the motor in, make sure you know that year of the motor and the year of the tranmission, you said that the car was from 1985, if that is the original tranny, that will make your life a whole lot easier, just go to any parts store, preferably napa auto parts, cuz around my area they are the only one that carries flywheels in stock, tell them the year of the motor and the year of the tranny, and they will get you something that will work, if you have anything that you can bring as reference, do it, it will make everyones life easier, especially yours, so you don't have to travel back and forth juggling flywheels, i recommend not doing a 305, i'm not sure if you know that difference between the 2 bolt mains and 4 bolt mains, but they didn't make 305's with 4 bolt mains and the 4 bolt mains hold up a lot more abuse than a 2 bolt, they only made the 350 and bigger with the 4 bolt mains, you'll be spending the same amount of money if you were to build up a 2 bolt 305, and you even start with more hp than a 305, but good luck with everything, keep me updated on the progress.
I did that and no one knows what kind of flywheel i need that whats making this hole project a pain in the a$$. What makes everyone confused is that the motor came out of a truck. I thought that wont mean much but the guys at the parts store say different. We have napa, autozone, advance auto and checker auto. the only place that has flywheels in stock is autozone and everyone else has to order them and prepay for them and some charge $300 for flywheels that might not even fit
I am afrad that this motor isnt going to work. i heard two thing that i can do first is to change the bell housing on the transmission from the 84 and get one from a 1990 camaro so the larger flywheel will fit. but will the new cluch and presser plate fit the splines on the trany. Or find a web sight that can order or make a custom flywheel that is the same size diamater as the one that came with the camaro but the bolt pattern as the motor. That sound like it cost to much and more than i want to spend on a 305. If any one has any ideas, that would be vary helpful. Idon't know what to do and this hole project is giving me a headack. I also might have found a 400 small block crate motor for cheap. Would that bolt up to my stock 5 speed transmission? Is there any other stuff that i would have to do to make it fit? Cuz i would realy like the 400 in there insted of a 305 but if its a lot of work i might think twice. I don't have a lot of space and tools to do to much modafaction to the car.
