There are a couple electrical connections to the tranny. One is for the lockup feature in the torque converter. The other is the speed sensor (instead of a speedo output gear), which used to send a signal to the computer to to work your electronic speedo, cruise control, and engine management. You could leave the t.c. lockup disconnected, but if you do a bit of highway driving, having the lockup working will give better gas mileage and will reduce transmission temperatures. What is more important though, is to make sure the TV cable to the trans is hooked up and working properly. Without it, or if not adjusted right, the trans clutches will burn up.

Eh boy, that's not a good sign. When you lose 3rd and 4th gear, it usually means bad clutches. If the previous owner didn't have the trans set up just right, it could have cooked the clutch pack. The TV cable operates the Throttle Valve in the trans, to control line pressure, which also loads pressure to the clutches. No TV cable, or adjusted wrong, means low pressure, clutch slippage, and burning. Look at and smell the trans fluid. Does it look dark and smell burned?
To answer your adjustment question, first need to know what kind of carb you have. You need the proper geometry to set up the TV cable.

Here's one adjustment procedure link. I'll look to see if I have any others bookmarked.

Here's another TV link: http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php
It slipped a little at first, now you completely lost 3 & 4, and the fluid smells burned? I think the trans is cooked.
