I was wondering if anyone could explain why gateshifters are used for automatics? I was looking into getting one of these and trying to install it, but wanted some input. I have a 91 RS 305 which is all street but wanted to add the fun of shifting.

How do they work?
Does it act like a manual running through the 4 gears minus the clutch?
Once installed is the gearing all done manually andis the transmission not automatically shifting anymore?
Does it shorten the life of the tranny?

I have the Hurst V matic in mine, When you push down to engage the ratchet mode it acts just like that,if you tap the handle it shifts to the next gear,tap it again and so on. tap it the other way and it down sifts. It is spring loaded and can only jump1 gear at a time. Push down on it and it pops back up and works the same as all the other auto shifters.
