Default fuel problem

the check engine light came up on my 89 camaro rs and i pulled up the code and it says fuel relay and or problem in the circuit. now i'm guessing if the relay was bad it wouldnt run. if i let it sit a while it idles like **** for a few and sometimes stalls. also it has no pickup and my gas milage is ****ty along with i can smell gas when i stop. i just changed the plugs and it helped a little bit but the fuel prob is still there. any ideas?

i would check the vacuum lines to the EGR valve under the tpi or check the fuel pressure regulator

Default RE: fuel problem

There are two power feeds to the fuel pump, one through the fuel pump relay and another through the oil pressure switch. When the car is first started the oil pressure switch is open and the fuel pump relay closes to provide power to the fuel pump. After the oil pressure goes above 5 PSI the oil pressure switch closes and it also provides power to the fuel pump. When the relay goes bad the car will not start without a lot of cranking, and if the battery is not fully charged the engine will crank too slowly to bring up the oil pressure and close the oil pressure switch, and the car will not start.

However; this has nothing to do with the way your car runs, so do what parker said.

Z-28pete is right on the money! my 91 rs 305 did the exact same thing, after she was warm! let me guess started hard like it was flooded? and the idle was all over the place, the computer was in closed loop mode and would over feed the tb, i replaced the oil pressure sending unit! its right by the oil filter, runs about 40 bucks problem solved.
