I am going to buy a 1988 iroc-z 305 tpi 5-spd. I am fairly new to cars and I was just wondering what would be good performance mods to start off with. Also any other information that would be useful to know about the car, such as good oil to use or anything like that. The car only has 66000km.

 

are you sure its 66k and not 166k? there is no way of telling it hasnt rolled over yet. as for oil, a good brand of 10w-30 or 10-40 will work, just dont use the cheapest store brand. same for filters. for performance mods, start off with a good ignition system upgrade-new plugs, 8.5mm wire, new cap and rotor, and possibly a high voltage coil. then the next best things would be a cat back exhaust, headers, and high flow air filters. the factory setup for the intake isnt that bad, so there isnt much out there to upgrade with. you also may want to look into installing an aftermarket fan controller if it has electric fans. the factory has them set to come on really hot. lowering the operating temp improves power. with that, an 180* t-stat will also help a bit.

 

ya i no its 66000 for sure, for oil should i use synthetic? and for spark plugs should i use platnium ones or should i use the basic ones? will it effect it much?

 

no, dont use synthetic. the engine was designed to be run on conventional oil. the thinner molecules of the syntheic will cause more oil leaks to develop. as for platinum plugs, i ran them in mine and they fouled out in 5k miles, and i didnt feel any difference in power or efficiency at all over conventional plugs

so i got the car inspected, everything is good, but the only problem is mold. I am not sure where the leak is but I can smell mold in the car. Any suggestions how I could locate the leak? Any tips on how to remove the mold? Any tip helps

yes im sure, it has just been sitting under a car port for the last 2 years so it has barely been driven
