sounds like the carb is giving you problems. sticky choke or high idle linkage. imo quadrijunk are not the best carbs.

Hmm, that is odd... I had a buddy who I think had the same issue with the diesel noise... I'll check with him to see what was up with that...
On the high rev at idle, I just rebuilt my quadrajet a few months ago... filled with gunk and all types of crud... bought a rebuild kit from NAPA for my model, once I hooked up the newly cleaned carb and messed with the idle screws and what not, I was able to tone the idle down to about 750rpm at idle and 650rpm for when in drive at rest... Sometimes it jumps up to 1000rpm after a long drive but still tweaking it some...
Overall, the cleaning was quite simple and actually fun... completeted mine in a day while procrastinating studying for class... Boiling vinegar is a good solvent for the metal pieces (do it outside tho, trust me)...
I've been doing some test runs on fuel mileage, and after the clean up I've been running a lot better, 19mpgs for both city and highway, and over 22mpgs for almost all highway...
Just some info onto the carb, my quadrajet works well still, does the job for me... lol

On the mileage it was below 17mpgs before the rebuild, also had a clogged cat I think too at that point... it was a pain commuting from Durham to Raleigh NC in regards to gas consumption..! Used to have to fill up at least once a week and I was only travelling on Tuesdays and Thursdays... for the distance travelling, the amount of gas used was crappy... lol

ok well i havent dealt with that mechanic for awhile. come to find out he cracked the intake when changing the gasket. he replaced it with an edelbrock...... but he did it with a non egr intake...... deisel sound is gone. but now i have trouble starting in the morning and if i dont let it warm up for like 10 mins(even when it is 90+ out) it stutters. and when i get into it and it comes out of passing gear it falls on its face. the more gas you give nothing the rpms dont go up or nothing.... i think maybe its flooding itself cause no egr?

Nope, it's not the EGR, the engine will run just fine without one. Plus, your engine management system doesn't even know it's missing, it won't even trip a check engine light. I'm curious, has there ever been any machine work done to the engine or heads? If the block deck, or the heads have been milled down, that tightens up the space between the heads, and changes the angle fitment between the heads and intake manifold. I don't spose, after doing the intake two times, that the mechanic checked for a good angle match between the two? Because it sure sounds like an intake leak again to me. And not to bust yer chops, but when you take a car to a mechanic to get it running right, you take the car for a test drive first, before you pay him and drive off. If the same problem is still there, the car stays till it's fixed.
