82 Berlinetta 305 4BBL Questions
Ok, so we just bought a 1982 Chevrolet Camaro Berlinetta with the 305 4BBL V8. When we bought it the guy said it was having issues with the vacuum lines. Also the Choke light comes on at start-up, is this a good thing or bad thing.
When we start it up we have to rev it for a sec to hold idle or it will die, and when drive or reverse is engaged it will die if you don't give it some throttle.
We have an oil leak coming from somewhere that may be the back of the block but we haven't gotten it jacked up so we don't know. After it idles for a bit white smoke comes off the exhaust right behind the A-pillar and possibly from the valve covers, which the valve cover gaskets need to be replaced so that may explain that part but once again i don't know.
Can anyone help us?

Go through and do a basic tune up 1st (oil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, ect). While your doing the tune up check all of your vac lines & make sure they are connected and not cracked (remeber vac plugs too). Replace your leaky valve cover gasket (cheap & easy). After your tune up, then start adjusting your carb (choke, idle, fast idle)
Ok, thanks man. I'm also going to be cleaning the carb and throttle body, the airbox wasn't on and was missing the top so we're going to install something along the lines of an Edelbrock Pro Air Cleaner.
The distributor was replaced so it may or may not need the cap and rotor, however I'm also going to check the firing order and make sure it's correct.

White smoke may or may not be water getting burned off. It might be nothing major, but I'd look at the coolant and oil to make sure they haven't mixed due to a head gasket, cracked head/block. Again, its most likely not that, but I would check. I would skip the edelbrock and just find a junkyard stock air cleaner (assuming stock q-jet carb) The reason is because there are vacuum lines that connect to that, if you use the edelbrock open, you'll need to id the connections and plug them.
If you do have the stock q-jet, there is not much in the way of adjustment that can be done. Idle is about it, mixture screws are factory set and sealed. Stalling in reverse and a leak near the back of the block could indicate a bad converter or other transmission problems (if its trans fluid leaking, if oil, then its most likely rear main seal). best of luck!
