327 > 305 ?

Default 327 > 305 ?

Okay so I found a 327 block, all it needs it to be resurfaced, bored .30 over (he recommends it), a mild cam put in, and put my top end on it. Will the top end that I have on my 305 as of right now work? As it's the same block for a 327/350 and the topend I have are universal for 305/350. And will it be worth it?

327's are realy fun engines, their not near as common as a 305 or 350, they wont put out the same power as a 350, but their defintly a upgrade from a 305, we used to have a factory 327 chevelle, and i can say even for such a large car it had power.

i dont know what top end you have, but it will bolt on, but as to how switchable either the carb or the fuel injectors are, you might have to change the jets/injectors, but otherwise it'll work. as long as its a good price i would go for it man.

The top end is just an edelbrock performer manifold and a 550 holley carb (blown valves and needs new jets ).
He's selling it for $100. Says all I will need to do is bore it out .30 over, or .60 over if I want a HUGE difference. Then i'll need it resurfaced and a crank put in it. How much would you say that would run me? Found a crank for $189 so I just need to know how much engine work costs.

You mean bore it .060 over in reality it will gain you very little and may render the block unborable for a second time. Boring and regular hone is about $200 in my area cleaning $60 crack check $75 + new bearings and freeze plugs. They may include checking the main alignment for the above costs depending on the shop. I am not sure what you want to get out of the engine hp wise or what you have to spend on it but we will need to know this before you go to far. What compression ratio? Pump gas? 327s were good engines all were 2 bolt mains, is there a reason why you want one though I mean since you are buying a crank anyhow why not step it up to a 383 it will give you alot more bang for the buck. The $100 pricew for a 2 bolt main block seems a little high but that would be in my area in Pa. Here is a price for a new gm block I think they already come bored and ready to go and you wouldnt be wasting $200 buying a block that might be bad. http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...60390_-1_10719

$100 doesnt sound like a bad deal for a 327, like it said before if your looking for a high performance care, 327 isnt the engine, if your just looking for something with some good cruising power and want something a little different then their wonderful. but if you want high performance forget the 327, i would just do a blue print job, itll be cheaper for you, for about the same price they can jacket the cyclinders and hone them to stock bore, and depending on their condition reuse the stock pistons and not have to change the crank.

I'm not sure what compression or hp I want. Nothing extreme of course.. i just want it to be more powerful than the 305. And i'm not sure about a 350 or even 383 because i don't want to be broke on gas anymore than i already am with the 305.
And what is a blue print job?

What kind of car is it going into? Does the car have a computer? Expect to see the check engine light alot.

I also agree with griff, since its going to be out of the car why not stroke it to 383. then again I can understand the gas price thing too.

It's going in an 86 camaro with a 4 barrel holley carb and an edelbrock performer intake, including 3" catback flowmaster exhaust. How far can you take a 327 anyway?

Back in the late 60s, GM sold 327 powered cars that were rated up to 360 BHP (no accessories, dyno headers, optimized timing, etc)which translates into around 280 of today's flywheel net HP. These were high revving engines, but were also good in traffic. I suppose with a good set of heads, cam, and proper tuning, 350 wheel HP is attainable.
