Normal operating temperature for your 305 without A/C is between 180/220 deg's.

Since you stated it is a 1982 model. my opinion would be it is time to upgrade the cooling system. Start by replacing and checking the following:
1) radiator
2) hoses
3) thermostat 180 deg
4) new coolant mix
5) check your water pump & belt
6) check the electric fan
7) make sure you have a air dam under the car ( Major part of the cooling system).

Outside of a major engine problem (leaking head gasket) you should run about 180 in traffic

most people would kill for temps that range. mostly these cars ran 240-260 from the factory to meet emissions requirements. that is their acceptable factory operating temps, which are rediculous. 160 is too cold though for a street driven car as the oil and rings will not get hot enough. 180-200 is right about where you would want it

this is a rebuilt not original 305. the hoses, coolant, water pump is new but the radiator is older, thermostat is 160 and part of the dam is missing, and the fan is a stock clutch fan
