305 need help
Kid bought an 87 camaro that needs some love. It ran fine then it started leaking fuel out of fuel pump. Put a new pump on. After a couple of days it started to leak so have to get a new one. ? on the pump is the one that was on it had 3 lines the new one has 2 they told him to plug the one line as it wasn't needed. He didn't get it plugged well and when the tank became pressurized( heat of day) fuel came running out of it even when it was raised above the engine. Any thoughts on this? Also now it doesn't run or even start. I don't know if this is related to the pump or not. It is getting fuel cause I pump the carb and fuel squirts out. Have good spark. Cranks over but only fires on what seems like 1 cylinder. Is it possible that the timeing chain has jumped a tooth or 2? Have the distributer cap off and it appears the when set at TDC the rotor has past the no 1 post on its way to no 8. Thought I would ask before we tear into it.

Looked at it some more today. When I turned the crank I watched the rotor in dist and I had to move the timing mark about an inch until the rotor would start to move. Started to tear the front end apart. Down to getting the dampener off. It's being stubborn. Let you know what I find.

OK. Now I am really baffled. Got the cover off and found that the marks on the gears lined up. But the rotor in dist still points between 1 and 8. What I did was no great lose off my time as I found it is in need off a new water pump. So I was 3/4 of the way anyway. So now what? Pull the distributor?

you are there .. you may as well change it. from what you have said it doesn't sound like it's out of time. accounting for advance thats about where it should be A TDC if i'm reading you correctly. if it is jumping time the only other thing it could be is the distributor gear. i'm betting your problem is elsewhere. yes. but how are you getting TDC? harmonic balancer marks? feeling the piston with a probe or using a stop in the cylinder to find TDC? from what you said the rotor is pointing between #1 and #8 if your not getting an accurate TDC that may be the reason. besides that small of a variance can be adjusted at the distributor. sounds to me the distributor is retarded. turn it counterclockwise a bit and see if it will crank.
